In accordance with Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, Adequate and appropriate provisions of first aid facilities should be provided at all the time, so that the employees, students, members of the public and visitors are aware of the facilities. This will include appropriately trained first aiders and appointed persons, first aid equipment and rooms.
Provision of risk assessments to consider the number of first aiders/appointed persons required based on:-
Workplace hazards and risks.
History of accidents.
Number of employees.
Nature and distribution of the workforce. Duties and Requirements
The requirements relate to employees in terms of first aid provision and numbers of first aiders. Some of the areas of the College are open to the public on occasions and this also needs to taken into consideration.
London Film & Television Academy will ensure that the minimum legal requirements are met with respect to staff. In broad terms students will be treated as staff for the purposes of determining first aid requirements in areas other than Libraries and Galleries.
The distribution of first aiders and levels of risk need to be part of the determination.
Students may also be trained as first aiders/appointed persons for specific out of normal hour’s college activities. This is subject to approval by the relevant Head of College or Department.
Where first aiders/appointed persons are not available as required for specific out of hours activities the activities will be stopped immediately.
Provisions for appointed person
Fewer than 50 employees at least one appointed person.
50 to 100 employees at least one first aider.
More than 100 employees, one additional first aider per 100 employees. Responsibilities of Students
Students must report as soon as possible all accidents in which they are involved to either the lecturer in charge or another member of staff. The member of staff will ensure the accident is reported on the appropriate form.
Students who witness an accident or 'near miss' should bring the incident to the attention of the 'lecturer in charge' or another member of staff as soon as possible. Where there is any doubt as to whether the incident has been reported they must complete the appropriate accident form.
In the event of a First Aider or other member of staff asking for an area to be cleared following an accident, students should vacate the area immediately.
